Bengal Translator's Office

The Bengali Translators’ Office is an attached office under the administrative control of the Home & Hill Affairs Department, Government of West Bengal. It provides translation and linguistic support to the State Government and other statutory bodies to facilitate official functioning and communication.

The Office undertakes translation of Government papers, letters, documents, pamphlets, leaflets, advertisements, legal documents, guidelines, manuals, and handbooks, as requisitioned by the Home & Hill Affairs Department, the Chief Minister’s Office, and other departments of the Government of West Bengal.

It is responsible for the drafting as well as Bengali translation of the Hon’ble Governor’s inaugural address in the Budget Session of the West Bengal Legislative Assembly; translation of the Hon’ble Chief Minister’s Budget speeches in the capacity of M-i-C of various departments, and Budget speeches of Hon’ble Ministers-in-Charge of various departments.

The Office caters to translation requirements of different Central Government departments, Lok (erstwhile Raj) Bhavan, Election Commission of India, State Election Commission, West Bengal Legislative Assembly, West Bengal Human Rights Commission, Commissions of Inquiry, District and Sub-Divisional Courts, and the Vigilance Cell of the Home & Hill Affairs Department. It undertakes translations primarily between English and Bengali and between English and Urdu.

During General Elections to the Lok Sabha and the West Bengal Legislative Assembly, translators from this Office are deputed to the Office of the Chief Electoral Officer, West Bengal and the Home Department (Election Branch) to provide real-time translation support.

The Office has also contributed to the compilation of a glossary of terminologies and has progressively expanded its activities over the years in line with the State Government’s policy of greater use of Bengali in official administration.
