Office Status: Attached office under administrative control of Home Department.

There are Translators of various categories in this office for translation of several papers, documents etc in Bengali, English, Hindi and Urdu, as applicable, in order to facilitate administrative works of the Govt. of West Bengal and other statutory bodies.

Activities: This office undertakes translations of several Govt. papers, letters, documents, pamphlets, leaflets, advertisement matters, legal matters, guidelines, manuals, handbooks etc. as requisitioned by the Home Deptt, CMO and almost all the Deptts of the Govt. of West Bengal.

This office undertakes Bengali Translation of Hon�ble Governor�s inaugural speech in the Budget Session of the West Bengal Legislative Assembly; Bengali Translation of Hon�ble Chief Minister�s Budget speeches in the Assembly; Bengali Translation of Budget speeches of Hon�ble M-I-Cs of different deptts. in the Assembly every year.

Moreover it caters to the needs of the Central Govt. (through CMO, RTI, Home (Police) etc.), Raj Bhavan, Election Commission of India, State Election Commission, West Bengal Legislative Assembly, Human Rights Commission, Enquiry Commissions, District and Sub-divisional courts, Vigilance Cell (Home Deptt) in respect of translation works into : (1)English to Bengali and vice-versa, (2) English to Urdu and vice-versa. At present owing to a vacancy in the post of Hindi Translator the Hindi related translations are not undertaken. This apart, some Translators are now routinely deputed to the Office of the Chief Electoral Officer, West Bengal, Home Department (Election Branch) in order to perform real time translation during General Elections both to the Lok Sabha and the West Bengal Legislative Assembly.

This office has also made significant contributions in compilation of a Compendium of Terminologies.

Thus, during the last seven decades after Independence, aforementioned activities of the Office of the Bengali Translator to the Government of West Bengal have been intensified to keep pace with the avowed policy of the Government to make greater use of Bengali in administrative work and consequently the quantum of work has increased manifold.
